GForge Express Edition

GForge Express Edition is released. GForge EE is a free edition of GForge AS, so it has the same cleaned up interface and easy installation as GForge AS, with none of the limits on users or project memberships.

As with GForge AS, you can customize the theme, homepage, etc with the included source files for those items.

GForge EE is roughly on par, feature-wise with the open source 4.x GForge, but is easier to install and has a more consistent interface. GForge EE has some of the advanced GForge AS features removed or disabled, such as Tracker Workflow, document versioning, and automated cruise control building.

GForge Express Edition will be maintained in sync and bug-fixed simultaneous with GForge AS, and new features will be introduced to EE over time.

IT Business: Feds put open source into active service

The Canadian government is planning to use GForge as the starting point for asset management. A Treasury Board director walks us through the process and identifies the applications that will be tackled first.

The federal government has embarked on an ambitious project that will use open source software to manage assets created for use in the public sector, including custom-developed applications.

Called Intellectual Resources Canada (IRCan), the project is being led by the CIO Branch of the Treasury Board Secretariat but has its origins in Public Works and Government Services. The departments are setting up a repository of sorts based on GForge, an open source collaboration and code management tool which grew out of the original Sourceforge.net system created by VA Linux.

ComputerWorld: Harnessing resources with collaborative development

In today's networked enterprise, development managers can easily harness resources from any location. Collaborative development platforms allow developers - scattered around company locations, working from home, or with partner organizations - to contribute to projects the same way they would from a central site.

When it comes to collaborative development Tim Perdue practices what he preaches. Creator of the open source GForge collaboration platform, Perdue and his team are not centrally located and use its collaborative development environment (CDE) to orchestrate the software development process.

"My own team is scattered all over the world and we use GForge ourselves to manage our developers," Perdue says. "Tasks and defects are put into the queue and assigned to team members. They get notifications, wherever they are, and can also see a summary on their personal dashboard."

GForge Releases Advanced Reporting and Time Tracking Module

URBANDALE, IA . August 11, 2004

GForge Group has announced the release of its Advanced Reporting and Time Tracking Module to the GForge Project under GPL licensing. This represents a significant enhancement for GForge by providing the ability to manage and track by project, task, group or individual within GForge. The module includes more than 40 charts and graphs offering hundreds of combinations.

GForge Group created the Advanced Reporting and Time Tracking Module after feedback from GForge users asking for more reporting options within GForge. It was reserved for contributing clients until the investment to develop the module was recouped. That has been accomplished so the module is now being released to the open source community under GPL.

GForge recognizes the following partners for their contributions in making this possible: ADP, Cybernet Software Systems, Dropzone Networks, E-Crossnet Limited, InfoEther LLC, Lincoln University of Pennsylvania, Real Networks (Helix Community) and the United States Courts. Like all open source developers, the GForge Group depends on support from organizations such as these to continue development and enhancement for the GForge project.
