Updates
GForge Group provides updates to GForge for our customers through the support portal. You can login and access available files. The installation and upgrade process is greatly simplified in GForge AS.
Source Code
Much of the source code for GForge AS is now included in the downloadable .zip file, with the exception of some core files needed to enforce the license restrictions.
Supported Platforms
The GForge AS installer works well and is thoroughly tested and supported on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4-5 and CentOS 4-5. The installer also includes support for Debian Etch and Ubuntu 6. Suse 10 is not currently supportable due to many bugs and problems it has with PHP5 and Subversion. Solaris 10 has also been tested by GFG engineering, however it is very complex to download and install all of the dependencies.
Who needs a License?
GForge AS has two license models, Tiered and per-user. The per-user model allows unlimited users to register accounts and participate in the projects hosted on the system. You only need licenses for users that join projects. The tiered model counts all users, but at a reduced price.
Open Source
GForge AS is not open source - if you want an open source solution, try the 4.5 version at GForge.org. For best results, it is recommended that you use the vmware image The 4.x system does have many features, including the ability to link defects to SVN and CVS commits, but is missing the cleaned up GUI, rewritten codebase and process enforcement features of 5.x.
Difference of AS with 4.5
GForge AS was completely rewritten from scratch to make it easy to install, clean to maintain, modular, etc. All of the features listed on the AS Page are the new features added since 4.x as part of the rewrite and new edition.
Limitations of AS Trial Version
GForge AS has a trial version that is free and will never time out, but it limits the total number of your registered users that can join any or all projects to 15. This means only 15 of the total users will be able to join projects to do things like editing source code, editing or being assigned tracker items, editing docs, and similar activities. Note this is not the same as "15 users per project", which wouldn't be much of a limitation.
Migration from 4.5 to AS or EE
A migration kit to convert the database is available here The kit includes a PDF document explaining the process and a script that must be run on your 4.5 installation to dump the data out to disk in a particular format. This data must then be moved over to the new server and imported.
Community Edition
The Community Edition is based on the rewritten GForge AS codebase, so it has the easy installation and clean interface, but the advanced features have been removed or disabled. Feature-wise it is basically on par with the 4.5 open source version. See the matrix on the download page for details. Community Edition is free with no user limitations, and is binary only.
